DEBATING CONTEST

MARIST BROS. WIN TROPHY.

CONTEST IN MASTERTON.

During the weekend a team representing the Marist Brothers Old Boys’ Debating Club, Wellington, visited Masterton to compete against the Masterton Catholic Club (holders) for the Marcus James Catholic Action Cup. After keen competition the Marist Bros, were the winners, having being awarded first place in the debate, first place in oratorical, and first place in impromptu speech. The Masterton Catholic Club won the elocution and Christian doctrine speech section. The following members represented Marist Bros. Old Boys in the debate:— Messrs R. Dwyer and J. Curry; elocution, Mr W. Slattery; oratorical, Mr R. McCarthy; Christian doctrine, Mr P. P. McGavin; and impromptu speech, Sergt. M, P. Keogh. The Masterton Catholic Club were represented by the following:—Debate, Mr W. Orange and Mr J. Murphy; elocution, Mrs J. Murphy; oratorical, Mr S, Herbert; Christian doctrine, Mrs J. Murphy; impromptu speech, Mr W. Orange. The adjudicators were Miss O. R. Sutherland, the Rev. Father Connor (Carterton), and Mr J. Robertson, M.P.
