MORE PRODUCTION
RESPONSE IN WAIRARAPA VERY GOOD. EVERY FARMER DOING SOMETHING. “The response in the Wairarapa to the appeal for mere production has been very good,” observed Mr Hugh Morrison, president of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, this morning. “All farmers are doing something,” he added. “The appeal has got down to the individual farmer, and every one is on the job.” A considerable area of land was being turned over this season, and many extra crops were being grown, said Mr Morrison. Hundreds of acres of land were being ploughed which had never been broken up before. If the Wairarapa had a good season—the prospects were most favourable at present—the extra production would be there. Last season was a record one for meat production, and it was a question whether that could be kept up, though it depended largely on the season. If they were short in numbers he believed they would make it up in weight. Mr Morrison said that orders for fertilisers were a record. A huge amount of extra fertilisers was wanted, and there would be a big rush to secure it for topdressing. One trouble to be overcome was that of delivery, as it could not all be despatched at the same time. He added that there was a tremendous amount of co-operation between farmers to assist each other as much as possible. All were keen to help others.
