Germany for the first time since the outbreak of war has admitted that British bombs were dropped on an inI dustrial plant. A communique states: I “Our bombers yesterday attacked aero- | dromes at Eastchurch and Southend and successfully raided the Harbour at

Bognor Regis. Stronger attacks were launched last night against the harbour of Liverpool, also at Cardiff, Bristol, Middlesbrough, Chatham and Thames Haven; also armament centres at Sheffield. Norwich and Coventry. Air fights developed in several places. Thirty-eight English and twelve German planes were shot down. British planes last night intentionally attacked Berlin’s residential quarters and suburbs. Explosive and incendiary bombs damaged several blocks of flats, killed and injured numerous civilians and damaged houses. One of the at-

tackers was shot down by gunfire before reaching Berlin. The British also attacked the Leuna Works. The damage was slight and there was no dam-

age worth mentioning elsewhere in Central and Western Germany. Losses throughout the day were 44 British and fifteen German planes. A U-boat commanded by CaptainLieutenant Schetk sunk seven armed merchantmen, five of which were strongly convoyed.”
