KELLOGG PACT
DECLARED STILL SOUND PRINCIPLES THAT MUST PREVAIL. STATEMENT BY CORDELL HULL. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON, August 28. The Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, on the twelfth anniversay of the signing of the Kellogg-Briand Pact, is- ’ sued a statement denouncing - aggression and warning that no nation can hope to remain at peace except by vigorous preparation for self-defence.
“It was to spare the human race the untold suffering and tragedy that we are witnessing today that the pact was signed,” Mr Hull said. “Today no country and no individual is secure; no human being anywhere can be sure that he will be allowed to live in peace.” Citing violations of the pact, Mr Hull commented: “The soundness of its underlying principles is not impaired by what has happened since. Sooner or later they must prevail as the unshakable foundation of international relations, unless war with its horrors and ravages is to become the normal state of the world and mankind is to relapse into chaos and barbarism.”
