(BY

“THE GRAFTER.”)

_ The combined Taranaki and Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Clubs opened their annual two-day race meeting on the Taranaki Jockey Club’s course at New Plymouth yesterday. RACING FIXTURES

August 31. —Taranaki Hunt. August 31.—Otago Hunt. September 5. 7.—Wanganui. September 14. —Ashburton County. September 14, 16. —Avondale. September 19, 21.—Geraldine. September 21. —Marton. September 28.—Kurow. September 28.—Foxton. September 28, 30 —Ohinemuri.

La Boca Should Run Well. La Boca, which had the misfortune to fall over another horse at the first of the Kennels double soon after the start of the Hunt Cup on the final day at Riccarton, should add to his winning record at Wingatui on Saturday in the Otago Hunt Cup Steeplechase.

One of the “finds’' at the Grand National meeting. La Boca won the Enfield and Beaufort Steeplechases, both races being easy for him. He is a safe jumper with plenty of stamina and against weaker opposition than he met at Riccarton it would appear as though only a mishap will stop him from winning.

Otago Hunt Cup. Although the -field for the Otago Hunt Club Cup Steeples does no run to any great numerical strength, it should nevertheless provide an interesting race over the Wingatui country. At the Christchurch Hunt Club's meeting El Caballo 10.13 scored a comfortable win in the Hunters’ Steeples, but unfortunately discounted the performance by falling in the Enfield Steeples, for which he started favourite. La Boca 9.3 won from Baitruin 10.12 and Joy Boa 10.0. La Boca 9.10 won again in the Beaufort Steeples with Baitruin 10.11 a moderate third. El Caballo 11.6 was a moderate fourth in the Hunt Cup, in which La Boca 10.12 fell. At Wingatui El Caballo meets La Boca on the same terms as when they met in the Hunt Cup. Baitruin meets La Boca on 131 b better terms than in the Beaufort, Steeples, and Joy Boa meets La Boca on 251 b better terms than when they were first and third in the Enfield Steeples. The figures should give Joy Boa a chance, but, although he won at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting, he has also put up some rather indifferent performances. On form on the final day of the Grand National meeting Golden Glow will find support. He won from a moderate lot in the Hunt Cup Steeples, and fell when in the" field for the Beaufort Steeples. On the final day he was third in the Hunt Cup Steeples, beating El Caballo and La Boca, who fell. At Wingatui Golden Glow meets El Caballo and La Boca and 21b worse terms. Golden Glow was saddled up again for the Lincoln Steeples and made quite a creditable show. Lochcoribb is a half-sister to Shillelagh Wood, a sister to Ballybrit, and shaped well in a flag steeplechase at Winton. The form of those above is fairly well exposed, and the sister to Ballybrit apparently holds a winning chance. Attire is an unknown quantity, but may be found, contributing zest to an interesting: race.

May be Able to Stage Come-back. F. Hall has devoted a good deal of time to Entail lately and the Posterity gelding may prove capable of staging a come-back. He is nicely conditioned and so far has not shown any signs of soreness. The mile and a quarter Ashburton Handicap will see him next in action.

Rebel Chief. Rebel Chief is at present spelling but he will be brought in later with a view of making another trip to the West. Coast, the scene of all his successes in recent seasons.

May Make Him Careful. Half and Half had a commanding lead when he crashed with five furlongs still to run in the Styx Hurdles at Riccarton. The fall has not apparently had any lasting effects. With'plenty of pace on the flat and staying ability, Half and Half would appeal if he could be relied on to do the job without making mistakes. Possibly the spill will have made him more careful. Colonel French. Colonel French shaped poorly in his three races at Riccarton, but possibly he had had enough racing for the time. Freshened up. he should not have much trouble in beating a moderate lot in the Hunters’ Flat at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting. At the South Canterbury Hunt meeting last month Colonel French won a similar type of •race. With more experience he should make good among the best class hurdlers. Paper Money Destroyed. ■ As a sequel to an accident last week in which he injured his pelvis, Paper Money has been destroyed. His owner was advised by veterinary surgeons that the life of the horse could be saved, but Mr Faulks would not risk Paper Money suffering any pain and had him destroyed. Paper Money was foaled in 1916. and was imported to New Zealand by the late Mr ,1. B. Reid. After being located at Elderslie for three years. Paper Money was sent to the Amberley district for two or three years, where he got Wild Chase and Paper Slipper, two of the best of his progeny. Then he went to the Salisbury Stud, and Alma and Boloyna were two of the best he left there, before going to the Wanaka Stud, where he remained until his death. In addition to the horses already' named. Paper Money left outstanding performers in Inflation, Silver Coat, Silver Paper, Silver Streak, Paper Note. Autopay, Money Mine and others. It is estimated that during the seventeen seasons his progeny have been racing they have won 792 races in the Dominion. the stake money aggregating £769,725.

Should Race Well. Sparkle. an easy winner of the Dunedin Cup at her last start, is due to resume racing in the Tally-Ho Handicap on Saturday. Consistency was one of the features of Sparkle’s record last season, her stake earnings being £ll6O. If she keeps sound she should race well in the chief distance handicaps this season. Te Ore’s Bad Luck. A good second to Minority earlier in the day, Eupatrid led all the way to win the Waverley Handicap at the Hunt meeting at New Plymouth yesterday. He shared the lead with Barry Boy till the straight, but then went away and won easily by a good margin from Sea Link, who had the run of" the race in behind the two. leaders, and Silver Gift. Mountain Fox, not prominent early, finished well for fourth. Zest and Te Ore were best of the others. Roeon. who drew the rails, got away badly and lost all chance. Eupatrid ran two solid races and thoroughly deserved his win at his second appearance. Zest went a good race for a fresh horse. Te Ore ran a good race after having a bad spin.

Larwood Scores a Third.

Favourite at liberal win odds, Minority scored a very easy win in the Whenuakura Handicap at the combined Hunt Clubs’ meeting at New Plymouth yesterday. He was kept on the fence in behind the pacemakers, Tolaga and Eupatrid, and, soon after turning for home, he strode into the lead and quickly placed the issue beyond doubt. Eupatrid was a clear second from Larwood, who joined the leading bunch on the turn. All Bunsby was fourth, with Stratford almost in line. Stratford, did not get going till the race was half over, but came home very fast and just missed a place. Tolaga tired before reaching the straight and was last to finish. Vivacious was always well back, and did the usual finishing run.
