SOUTH AFRICAN WAR

CONFERENCE OF VETERANS. RENEWAL OF GRANT ASKED FOR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Augilst 28. Men from all parts of the Dominion who fought in the South African War assembled in Auckland for the annual conference of the South African War Veterans’ Association of New Zealand. Representatives were present from 17 branches. Delegates visited Albert Park, where a wreath of laurel and South African daisies was placed on the South African Artillery Memorial by the retiring Dominion president, Mr G. N. Cresswell.

Christchurch remits adopted included one asking the Government to renew the grant of £250 for the relief of distress among South African exservicemen.

Another remit urged the Government to pay the South African grant of £l3 a year in full to all veterans and not to take it into consideration when assessing income to reduce age benefit payable under the Social Security scheme.

It was also urged that the grant be paid to persons living in New Zealand at the commencement of the South African War who served in other than New Zealand units. Mr A. G. Bertram. Auckland, was elected president for the ensuing year.
