A formation of 23 German bombers, under a large fighter escort, approached the south-east coast this morning. They encountered fierce anti-aircraft fire. Shells burst among the formation as they proceeded inland and loud explosions were heard. British fighters intercepted the bombers and two airmen were seen to bale out. One parachute drifted out to sea and the other came down inland. * A British fighter shot down a Mes-
serschmitt over south-eastern England. The pilot baled out and landed in an orchard. High-explosive bombs demolished a house in the London district last night. Eight high-explosive bombs fell on a south-eastern coastal town shortly after midnight, causing considerable damage, including the demolition of a nursery, but no casualties. Another salvo fell in a neighbouring district a few minutes later. Fighters intercepted the raiders and a Messerschmitt after a sharp clash, streaked out to sea, rapidly losing height. Two other Messerschmitts attacked balloons, shooting one down in flames. A raider, it is believed, was shot down off the Welsh coast last night. MILLION DOLLAR GIFT MR CHURCHILL'S GRATITUDE (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) RUGBY, August 23. The Prime Minister, Mr Winston Churchill, in telegraphing his acknowledgment to Mr McConnell, proprietor of the “Montreal Star,” for his gift of a million dollars for increased consignments of aircraft from Canada, expressed his admiration and added: “The hard-tried and enduring people of Britain know well their brothers are numerous, powerful and true.” The aircraft will be known as “McConnell's Squadron.” ENEMY LOSSES DESTRUCTION OF 24 PLANES. REPORTED IN EVENING. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.54 a.m.) RUGBY, August 28. It was officially stated at 8.35 p.m. that 24 enemy aircraft were known to have been destroyed today.
BOMBS ON BERLIN NAZIS REPORT DESTRUCTION OF HOUSE. (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) BERLIN, August 28. A radio message stated that seven British planes dropped incendiary bombs on Berlin on Sunday night, destroying a house near the outskirts. R.A.F. OFFENSIVE

(British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 9.54 a.m.) RUGBY, August 28. An Air Ministry communique stalest “Last night R.A.F. bombers attacked military objectives in Germany, Italy and in enemy occupied France. •‘ln Germany the targets included docks at Kiel and Wilhelmshaven, a transformer station at Kelsterback, 1 near Frankfurt, a Messerschmitt factory at Augsburg, oil tanks and supply depots at Mannheim and several aerodromes.
“In Italy the Fiat works at Turin and the Marelli magneto factory at Sesto San Giovanni were again attacked. “In enemy-occupied France oil tanks in the Gironde Estuary, near Bordeaux, at Pavillac, near Brest and at Cherbourg were bombed. One of our planes is missing.”
