CARTERTON

BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over the monthly meeting held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were also present Councillors E. McKenzie. H. Mortensen, W. A. Hart. C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey. Miss O. W. Wolters and R. A. Copeland. Apologies for absence were received and accepted from Councillors J. Udy and L. M. Clark. The treasurer submitted a statement which showed a credit balance in the District Fund at the Bank of New Zealand of £726 13s Id and at the Pest Office Savings Bank of £1419 Ils 9d. The Gasworks Account was in credit to the amount of £315 13s Bd.

Accounts amounting to £941 13s lOd on account of the District Fund and £278 15s lOd (gas-works) were passed for payment. The- secretary of the Education Board wrote in connection with the proposed new swimming baths for Carterton. It was decided that the Board be advised that when plans and specifications are available the same would be sent to the Board for perusal.

The Mayor stated that a meeting of the Centennial Committee to deal with the baths would probably be called next week.

The appointment of an assessor for the Borough was held over till the next monthly meeting of the council. The reports of the Works Committee and the Gas Committee were adopted. The Mayor submitted a report of the Home Guard meeting held in Masterton recently. The question of ploughing and cropping of the lower portion of Carrington Park was considered, and it was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the Works Committee. It was decided to call the attention lessee of the State Theatre to obtain matters connected with the building. The Inspector’s attention is to be drawn to the gorse growing on the cemetery reserve which is leased to a tenant.

MINIATURE RIFLES CLUB COMPETITIONS. The weekly competitions of the Carterton Miniature Rifles Club was held last evening. The shooting was good, the scores being as follows. — Club championship and Press Cup: Ross Hawker 100. W. Press 100, H. Torrey 99, R. Ordish 99, A. Ordish 99. G. Goodin 99, H. Murrell 99, D. Gayfer 98, C. J. DeLacey 98, A. J. King 96, L. Tunnicliffe 95.

Ladies’ aggregate and Gladful Cup: Miss J. Lorenzen 97, Miss A. McPhee 97. Miss Freer 87. Hawker and Son's Trophy: R. Hawker 99, C. J. Delacey 99, H. Torrey 99, L. Tunnicliffe 99, A. J. King 99, H. Murrell 99, W. Press 99, R. Ordish 97. Miss Freer 93. Two more competitions will be held and the season will be brought to a close on Tuesday. September 17. SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CARD TOURNAMENT. There was a good attendance oi members and friends at the fortnightly five hundred tournament held in the bandroom last night under the auspices of the Home and School Association. At the conclusion of the tournament supper was served. * The prize-winners were:— Ladies: Mesdames K. Hodder 1, and Tate 2; men, Messrs K. Hodder 1, and R. Thompson 2. The first prizes were donated by Messrs Feist and Co. and the W.F.C.A. Ltd., while Mrs Finn and Mr W. S. Steven. (Premier Bakery), gave the second prizes. This practical interest is greatly appreciated by the Association which is endeavouring to raise sufficient money to asphalt the basketball court at the Carterton School. GOLF IJRAW FOR COMPETITIONS. The following is the draw for the first round of the men's championship in connection with the Carterton Golf Club: —From No. 1 tee: George v. Goodin; Steel v. Taylor; Brown v. Dudson; Fisher v. Wells; Beaven v. Hill; Barrett v. Munro; Barr v. Callender; Colson v. Knutson. The remaining members will arrange their own partners for a bogey competition. Not more than five pairs are to start from No. 3 tee.

The following draw has been arranged for the first round of the ladies' championship and a club medal round for the senior ladies to be played on the club links at Clareville on Saturday:—Mrs Callender v. Mrs Harrington; Mrs Orr v. Miss Berrill; Mrs Murray v. Miss Armstrong; Mrs Dwane v. Miss J. Booth; Miss Freer v Miss McFarlane; Mrs Colson v. Mrs Robinson. The remainder of the club members will arrange their own partners for the afternoon. Mrs Colson and Miss Hamer will be in charge of the afternoon tea. Late Mr J. K. Cadenhead. The funeral of the late Mr John Kerr Cadenhead took place at the Clareville Cemetery yesterday afternoon. when a large number of his relatives and friends attended. Many beautiful wreaths were sent testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held. The funeral service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev W. J. Couling. of St Andrew's Church. The Foresters' Service was read by P.C.R. Bro A. F. Pink. The pall bearers were Bros C. Moore. Jas Fisher J. Gorman. S. Fisher. H. Lorenzen and

W. Miller, all members of the Court Marquis of Normanby Lodge of Foresters of whom deceased was an old member. Personal Items. Mr Pat Smith, of tne Telegraph Department, Gisborne, who is a relative of the late Mr J. K. Cadenhead, motored through from Gisbborne to be present at the latter's funeral yesterday.
