WATERSIDERS PUNISHED
FOR REFUSAL OF DUTY. AUCKLAND CASES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 27. Penalties incurred by 140 Auckland waterside workers, who, claiming they had been engaged to work with ship’s gear, refused to continue unloading the Union Company's motorship Waiana with the use of cranes on August 16 and August 17, have been imposed by the Waterfront Control Commission.
Seventy men who were dismissed on August 16 after they had refused to continue working have each been suspended from working on the wharves for eight days. A further 70 men, who were engaged to replace those already dismissed and who refused to work on August 17, have been suspended for five days.
The time of suspension dates from Monday. For some of the men. who are at present working on other ships suspension will be from the time their present jobs are finished. It was stated that the second 70 men received a lighter penalty as their refusal was because of a sense of loyalty to their fellow unionists, not because of any irresponsibility. The amount of wages lost by each man suspended for eight days would be about £lO.
