UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
REDUCTION IN VICTORIAN TAXATION. STATE HOUSING PROGRAMME. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The principal feature of the State Budget, presented yesterday, is a 15 per cent reduction in the Unemployment Relief Tax. Last year the tax yielded £1,999,000. a record. Registered unemployed in Victoria now are only 12,500, the lowest since the depression. The lax reduction would have been greater but for the drought, which is expected to increase unemployment. The State’s year ended with a surplus of £6,000 and a surplus of £3.000 is expected this year. The Government intends to push on with its housing plans. By the end of the year 1,150 houses are expected to be completed. Orders have been made for the demolition of 235 slum houses.
