TIMBER WORKERS

MEETING -OF WAIRARAPA MEMBERS. CONSCRIPTION OF WEALTH URGED. A meeting of the Wairarapa-Master-ton Timber Workers’ Union, held in the Masterton Y.M.C.A. Rooms on Saturday night, was attended by Messrs R. Humphreys and J. Read, national president and secretary respectively of the Timber Workers’ Union. There was a good attendance of members, Mr Humphreys being in the chair. The following motions were carried: That the Wairarapa Trades Council urges the Government to implement to the full their declared policy of conscription of wealth, and to abolish the National Security lax of Is in the £ on incomes of less than £6 per week.

That the Wairarapa Trades Council strongly protests against any alteration in the hours of work, without consultations with all trade unions and Labour Party branches, particularly while there is a large number of unemployed. The meeting endorsed a resolution passed by the Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union: “That the Federation of Labour take a definite stand against the recent Budget, which throws a heavy and unjustified burden upon the workers, and, further, to press for a higher increase in wages to offset the rising cost of living, and, further, to ask the Government to conscript wealth in accordance with its avowed policy.”
