Opening the second war session of Parliament, the Governor-General mentioned the troops dispatched north for the defence of the Union and the protection of its vital interests. It was necessary to seek Parliamentary sanction for a considerable increase in defence expenditure.. General Hertzog gave notice of motion in which he deplored the Government persisting in its war policy and also the manner in which the policy was carried out.
