Family Living in Garage. According to the Hutt County Council clerk the practice of using garages as living quarters is by no means uncommon in the county. Following a complaint to the medical officer of health, stated the building inspector, he visited a garage at Raumati South in which- were living a man, his wife, and their three children. Mr J. B. Yaldwyn said the council would not be able to turn the family out unless they had other premises, because the magistrate would not make an order. The amenities of Australian military camps were found by Mr James Fletcher, managing director of the Fletcher Construction Company, Limited, to be definitely inferior to those of camps in New Zealand. Mr Fletcher, who has returned from a month's visit to Australia, said that the grounds were in a very rough stale as compared with the trim and orderly conditions brought about by the Public Works Department in this country. He felt bound to say that the general standard of comfort provided was lower than here and recreational buildings were conspicuous by their absence.
