In the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup Steeplechase, to be contested on Thursday. Biform has been re-handicapped from 10.1 at 10.10. Double Winners. Although both races date from well back in the 80’s, only six horses have won the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase double in the same year. The first was Game in 1886, and the last Redditch in 1933. Game won the Australian Steeplechase with 12.12, after having been successful in the V.R.C. event with 11.10; but the greatest weight carried to victory in the Australian Steeples was 13.12 by Redleap in 1892. A few weeks previously he had won the Grand National Hurdles for the second time with 11.12, and the Grand National Steeplechase with 13.3 Daimio .won both races in 1895, and Bellis repeated his performance in 1905, while in 1910 Grafnax after having won the Grand National Steeples with 11.12, won the Australian Steeples with exactly a stone more in the saddle. Several horses have won both events in different years, among them Bribery, Guncap, Eaglet and Mosstrooper. There has been none, greater than Mosstrooper among modern jumpers. In 1929 he won the Australian Hurdles and Australian Steeplechase double, and the following year he won the Australian Hurdles for the second time and the Grand National Hurdles and Steeples double as well.

Leng Partnership Ended. The sale of the Williamstown Easter Cup and S.A.T.C. Derby winner Lusson for 350 guineas brought to a close a successful racing partnership which has existed between the veteran trainer James Scobie and the owner Mr E. E. D. Clarke lor almost 40 years. In his long association with racing seldom did Mr Clarke enter into the bloodstock market in his quest for outstanding performers. He preferred to race those of his own breeding, and the advent of The Welkin to the Melton stud, maintained by him, saw the fulfilment of his ambition. The Welkin and a number of mares wore purchased for him in England by Mr J. E. Brewej, and among the mares were Teppo and Light, who were destined to become outstanding stud matrons. Here is a list of the important races I won by Mr Clarke: —Champion Stakes (Emir), Melbourne Cup (Trivalve), ■Victoria Deby (Wolawa, Furious, Trivavle. Hua). Maribyrnong Plate (Trey), W.A.T.C. Derby (Benbow), V.R.C. St Leger (Trivalve, Hua). V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes (Thrice. Isa. Hua). Ascotvale Stakes (Emir. Charles Stuart, Wolawa. Two, Deneb. Thrice, Isa, Rosina). Caulifield Guineas (Thrice), Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Charles Stuart), Gimcrack Stakes (Furious), A.J.C. Champagne Stakes (Charles Sturt, Two, Thrice, Rosina). A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes (Thrice, Furious. Wolawa), Oaks Stakes (Hyades, Furious), Adelaide Cup (Eye Glass, twice).
