SHIPMENT OF HORSES
CRITICISED IN HOUSE OF COMMONS.
GOVERNMENT EXPLANATION.
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, August 22.
It was suggested in a question in the House of Commons by Mr W. Gallacher (Communist) that shipping space which might have been used for the evacuation of children overseas had been taken up by racehorses, and the attention of the Minister of Shipping was called to the case of 12 horses recently dispatched in a single ship. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Shipping, Sir Arthur Salter, who replied, pointed out that these ships and their fittings were originally intended for the transport o£ horses and the ships were quite unsuitaole for carrying children.
