Four conclusions were reached by the correspondent of the Swiss newspaper “Basler Nachrichten,” who has been making “an extensive tour of the defence zone in southern England, during which I saw the results of the recent raids on military objectives.’’ The conclusions as a result of this tour, during which “I was allowed to go where I wished and make what inquiries I chose without any restrictions whatever,” were: —

"First, the organisation of the ground defences is impressive; secondly, the damage done to military or civil objectives in the defence zone is minute; thirdly, the British official announcements are thus shown to be accurate; and, fourthly, the German attempt to undermine the morale of the British people ?.s completely failed.”

ENEMY LOSSES ONE PLANE SHOT DOWN BY LEWIS GUNS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9 a.in.) LONDON, August 23. The Air Ministry states that Lewis gunfire shot down an enemy bomber in the early morning, from the ground. In all nine enemy planes were destroyed on Thursday, seven by fighters and two by anti-aircraft fire. Four of our fighters were lost but two of the pilots are safe. REPORT UPHELD DAMAGE TO ALUMINIUM WORKS. SWISS CONFIRMATION. (Received This Day, 9.15 a.m.) ZURICH. August 23. An Air Ministry communique, on the R.A.F. raid on the aluminium works at Rheinfelden, is accepted in Switzerland as proving the reliability of the British official statements, not only because the works are near the frontier and the damage is easily visible, but because it became quite apparent that the British bombers did more damage than the British Air Ministry indicated. AIR MINISTRY REPORT FOUR ENEMY AIRCRAFT SHOT DOWN. (Received This Day, 9.15 a.m.) LONDON, August 23. The Air Ministry states that four enemy aircraft were shot down up to 5 pan.
