OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
TAXIS AT NIGHT (To the Editor.) Sir, —Late on a Sunday night recently I received an urgent call as a nurse and rang up ail taxi-owners. Only one of them answered the call and informed me that I would nt get a taxi that night owing to petrol restrictions and that they didn't work on Sundays. 1 had to cycle a distance of nearly two miles, carrying all necessary equipment. which was no light weight. Now, Sii', is there no way out of this difficulty? Could not one of the taxis be on call for urgent cases at night? 1 am. etc, NO CAR. Masterton. August 15. Inquiries were made this morning concerning the matters raised in the above letter. It was stated that taxidrivers were now restricted to sixty hours' work per week and they must have a complete 24 hours off in every seven days and a complete 10 hours off in every 24 hours. One taxi-driver stated that petrol restrictions had not affected his running, but another said he could only get three weeks' running out of his month's allowance of petrol. It was stated that a meeting of taxidrivers was being held tonight to consider charges and other matters.
