CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Metropolitan Trots SOME EXCITING FINISHES WITNESSED TOTALISATOR FIGURES SHOW INCREASE For the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s second day yesterday, there was fine but overcast weather, with south-west rain for the last two races. The attendance was excellent and the track good. The totalisator handled £55,936, compared with £49,479 10s last year. Two Wellington-trained trotters in Big Kauri and Franz Derby fought out an exciting finish in the Improvers’ Handicap, and it was only by the narrowest margin that Big Kauri gained the verdict. Ned Worthy scored a decisive win in the Speedway Handicap, and proved himself a great two-miler. Dusky Sound was responsible for one of the finest performances registered at Addington for some time, when he won the Belgium Handicap, and another great race took place in the King’s Handicap, in which Pot Luck, the winner, returned a double figure dividend. A red hot favourite in Chatmos suffered defeat in the Lincoln Handicap, but bad luck in the running contributed to this. Captain Bolt, who had put up a good performance on opening day, was allowed to pay almost double figures when he won the Avon Handicap after a great display of trotting. The Canterbury Handicap provided one of the most exciting races of the meeting, and a warm favourite in Great Blaze struggled home half a length in front of Three Tens. Nippon Derby. The ninth Nippon Derby Stakes at Tokio was witnessed this year by a record crowd of 56,000 and the totalisator business also set new figures for racing in Japan. There were 24 runners. and among them were the progeny of the imported horseS Diolite, Statesman. Primero. Tournesol, Shian Mor. Priory Park and the homebred stallion Tsukitomo, a son of Man o’ War. Five of the nine Derbies have been won by sons of Tournesol, who is a son of the winner of the triple crown Gainsborough.
In a great contest for this year’s honours leryu, a bay colt by Tournesol, beat Minami, by Primero, by half a head in 2.34 2-5, which is a second outside the record established by Sugenuma two years ago. The winner was bred at the Royal Stud Farm at Shamosa and bought by Mr H. Ishida for £2250.
Beaupartir Responding Well. G. Price is beginning to send along Beaupartir in his preliminary work in Sydney. Beaupartir is responding well and has attracted favourable attention.
A Strong Team. The Hastings trainer S. J. Reid begins the season with a team that is likely to give him a very high place on the list. Last season his most successful. representatives were Beaulivre, with nine wins and two seconds in 11 starts; Yogi four wins and six placings in 18 starts; and Kathbella, four wins and eight placings in 18 attempts. Dunmanway won twice toward the end of the season and Kobi also scored on two occasions before being turned out at the end of January. Although she did not win, Nora Gregor gained six minor placings in ten starts. Ivar, who had a successful three-year-old career, was not produced last season, a lengthy spell being necessitated by a thickened joint. He is in work again.
The younger division comprises Barbara Miller, a big filly and sister to Geira, who showed pace in her few races and is expected to be much improved this season; Burra Sahib, a colt by Bulandshar from Provence, a sister to Maine and Normandy: a filly by Solicitor-General from Lucinda, dam of Lycidas, and another filly by Tiderace from Pure Gold, dam of the good performers Gold Trail and Desert Chief.
The Lucinda filly is being prepared for early spring racing, but the other two-year-olds will take more time. Yogi is expected to be one of the .best handicap horses in the Dominion, and Kobi. who will race in future as a gelding, should show something like his true form. British Bloodstock. Argentine breeders have taken advantage of war conditions to buy freely of English bloodstock. Just lately an agent has shipped Waterbird (by Flamingo), winner of more than £5000; Convert (by Apron), winner of a Hunt Club Cup; and Senor (by Trigo), a full-brother to Harincro,
who is at the stud in Australia The agent still has over £lO,OOO to spend, but is waiting until the war situation is clearer.
ExMasterton Trainer.
The trainer J. T. Jamieson, formerly of Masterton, had only nine wins, worth £4781, in Sydney last season, but he more than doubled this sum by the success of his horses at important meetings in Melbourne.
Gundagai Starts Well.
Gundagai, a son of Pantheon, is the first of the Sydney horses to enter spring calculations. Ho beat a good field pointlessly at Victoria Park and immediately was placed near the top of the spring betting lists. He has won his last four races and may improve further.
Beaulivre and Caulfield Cup. Although Beaulivre is one of the Epsom Handicap favourites, his owner, Mr E. C. Harnett, has supported him for the Caulfield Cup. The performances of Beaulivre in Queensland suggest that he is likely to be suited by the Caulfield event if it is run at Caulfield, but it is unlikely that the Epsom will be passed by if conditions are favourable.
