THINGS GOING WELL

ROOSEVELT ON AMERICAN DEFENCES INSPECTION OF NEW ENGLAND BASES. PRODUCTION OF WAR MATERIALS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) WASHINGTON. Auguct 10. President Roosevelt, after completing the first step in an inspection of the New England defence bases, said in a statement in Boston: "The inspec--. tion shows we are really getting into our stride and I am very much satisfied with what I saw. Things are going awfully well. I hope by late autumn that all navy yards and army arsenals will be in full production. The cheapest way to produce war materials is to run on full production; you save money in the long run by doing so.” A Honolulu message says the navy is planning the largest naval aviation base in the Hawaiian area, a 2.700acre airport at Oahu Island, to supplement the Ford Island field at Pearl Harbour.
