SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP HASTWELLS v WESLEY. NGATERE IN SCORING FORM. Hastwells and Wesley met at Lansdowne on Saturday. The ground conditions were fairly good although a little slippery. This tended to ease play up and lowered the usual standard of play which has been recorded this season. Wesley did not have their usual team playing, the vacancies being filled by lower grade players. From the commencement Hastwells attacked but Wesley cleared and took play down field to the Hastwells circlej but slow following up spoilt the ad-, vantage. Hastwells forwards broke through and M. Ngatere had a shot which went over the top of the net. From the 25yds bully M. Ngatere went through on his own and made no mistake with the opening goal. A spell of even play with a fair amount of speculating and mis-hitting by both sides followed, till about the middle of the spell, when Hastwells set up an attack from which M. Ngatere again goaled. Hastwells continued to attack and Foster had a shot which was well stopped by the Wesley goalie. Hastwells were having the better of the game at this stage, Foster and Worthington both scoring in quick succession. Wesley took play to the Hastwells circle and an obstruction gave Wesley a penalty corner, but Hastwells cleared and took play to the Wesley circle where M. Ngatere scored his third goal. Hastwells attacked for the remainder of the spell Gyde adding to the score, while M. Ngatere, R. Dick and Gyde had shots but missed. The spell ended 6—o in Hastwells’ favour.
Wesley attacked from the bully off in the second spell, and penetrated the defence where Cathie had an open goal but the shot missed. Hastwells forwards broke away and Gyde finished the movement by scoring. Very even play, with many breaches by both sides was witnessed for most of the spell. Hastwells had several shots which were well saved by the Wesley goalie who had. a better chance this spell than in the first spell when the other backs smothered his chances of attempting to save. The closing stages of the game saw Wesley attacking strongly but the Hastwells defence held. Cathie and Stevenson both had shots which missed, the game ending Hastwells 7, Wesley 0. The umpires were Messrs Clements and Moor.
CARTERTON v DALEFIELD. FAIRLY EVEN GAME. Carterton and Dalefield met at Carterton on a very slippery ground. It was a fairly evenly contested game. Carterton winning by 4 goals to 2.
