WOMEN’S WELFARE LEAGUE

MEETING IN MASTERTON. GIFTS OF CLOTHING REQUIRED. The monthly meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held yesterday afternoon in the Midland Hotel. This meeting had been postponed from the previous week on account of the Paddy's Market and there was a smaller attendance of members than usual.

Miss Beiliss reported on visits paid to the hospital during the month. Visitors for August will include Mrs Drummond and Miss Cameron.

The convenor of the Hospital Committee said that owing to the difficulty of obtaining sufficient supplies and of transport it would be necessary temporarily at least to provide one tea and two afternoon teas per month to the T.B. ward instead of two teas and two afternoon tea.

The president, Miss Kummer, reported on a very successful visit paid to the Buchanan Home during the month. With Miss Coleman as pianist and Mrs Gooding as song leader an impromptu concert was held into which the inmates of the Home entered with enthusiasm. Afternoon tea was provided for the inmates while the visitors were entertained by the Matron. The next visit will be held in September. Mrs McKenzie reported several needy cases which had been given assistance during the month. There was still a need, she stated, for gifts of clothing which could be left at Mr Shoosmith’s shop in Queen Street. Miss Kummer said that she had received a quantity of wool from Matron Barnitt for knitting theatre stockings and requested the assistance of members of the League in connection with this work.

A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Miss Munro, who. it was stated, had done excellent work in child welfare activities in Masterton.

It was decided to send a letter of condolence to Mr and Mrs T. T. Denbee in connection with the death of their son in a flying accident. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss McLaren for a very generous donation of clothing.
