WASHINGTON. August 9
Mr Sumner Welles (Assistant Secretary of State) announced that the American Ambassador to Belgium. Mr Cudahy, had been recalled, for consultation and added "Mr Cudahy’s interview (in which he spoke of food supply and other problems in Europe, and defended King Leopold's act of surrender), was given without the authorisation of the State Department, and tiie interview violated standing instructions from the State Department. Certain views of Mr Cudahy expressed cannot be construed as representing the Government's views. Seme quarters express the opinion that there is a possibility of further disciplinary action being taken.
