Corporal Warwick Hall, writing from Cape Town to his parents, said that members of the Second Echelon were allowed off the transport, at Cape Town and made the most of their time in the South African port. On the Sunday they went for a car ride round the I suburbs and saw some splendid homes and gardens. They also went through the slums and were astounded at what they saw. On the Monday they took on a 270-mile run into the country and visited a town called Worcester where they had lunch. They also visited several small villages, all of which seemed to have an old world charm of their own. Some were typically Dutch while others were French in appearance. Nearly every farm seemed to be devoted to vineyards and fruit growing. Cattle and. sheep farms were few and far between and what animals they saw were of poor quality. “Altogether it is a very fine country." staled the writer, “but give me good old New Zealand every time.
