FIRM STAND
OVER INDO CHINA ACCORDING TO VICHY GOVERNMENT. MESSAGE TO CHIANG KAI-SHEK. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SHANGHAI. August 8. The Chinese Press reports that the Vichy Government has informed General Chiang Kai-shek that France is standing firm over Indo-China and will resist any Japanese military moves. A Hong Kong message states that a reliable Japanese source reports that negotiations between Japan and the French authorities in Indo-China are more difficult and that a stiffening of the Japanese demands will probably result.
JAPANESE DEMANDS PRESENTED TO FRENCH COMMANDER. CHINESE MASSING TROOPS ON FRONTIER. (Received This Dav. 9.0 a.m.) HONG KONG, August 8. A French traveller from Hanoi states that a Japanese mission presented General Decoux, Commander-in-Chief of the French Far Eastern forces, with a memorandum covering the "co-op-eration” that Japan expects. Simultaneously it was learned that the Chinese are massing troops on the IndoChina frontier, for a push to Hanoi if the Japanese seize the Haiphong railway for troop movements. INDOCHINA FORCES PREPARATIONS TO RESIST INVASION. (Received This Day, 9.0 a.m.) CHUNGKING, August 8. A military spokesman said movements of Indo-Chinese troops on the Kwangsi border indicate that they are preparing to resist a possible Japanese invasion.
