GOLF NOTES

RIVERSIDE CLUB CONTESTS COMMENT ON RECENT PLAY. THE PRESIDENT'S TROPHY. (By “Longdrive.” >

Good scores were the order of the day on Saturday by members of the Riverside Golf Club, when they played in the second medal round for the President's Trophy. Heading the list in this week's

round was G. Challis. It is very pleasing to all to hear that he has at lasi struck form. Last year he was considered a tough man to encounter in match play and now it seems that he should have a particularly good chance of securing championship honours. Mr G. Challis’s score was 86-22-64. Another player who has returned many good cards lately is Max Manson. On Saturday he played a much more steady game than usual and handed in a card of 66 net. Going out in 42 and doing the home journey in 42 enabled F. Shearer to return a card of 66 net. Mr Shearer has not been taking the game very seriously this season. It is match play that proves upset-

ting to many players. R. Wearne played a medal round of 78-10-68. which was rather a great score, but he did not stand up to the strain of playing R. Hatch in the “Bobbin" competition, R. Hatch being the winner, 1 up at the nineteenth.

Ken McCalmont has been playing

to his handicap for some weeks past and he returned a card of 67 net. He has now had his handicap reduced to 24-18.

Jim Thornton, by playing good golf, handed in a card of 72 off the stick. His card for the round was as follows: 4. 3,3, 3,5, 4,4, 5. 3—34; 4,4, 4,5, 5,3, 4, 5. 4—38; total, 72. This card could have been reduced at least 4 or more strokes as this player missed several short putts.

In the first round of the championship J. Thornton defeated W. Palamontain and M. Thornton defeated L. Roff 1 up. Both players put on good golf and the result of this game was in the balance right up to the last tee when L. Roff (who is well known for his long driving) in an effort to reach the 18th green drove his ball out of bounds through the fence at the back of the green (270 yards). Thornton, Junr., played steadily and took the match one up.

In the intermediate championship games, Greg Jones defeated J. Skeet

in a match that was lost by very poor putting.

In another championship match F. Pool played to one over par for the first 9 and won his match easily against R. Wearne.

Players are reminded that the first round of the championship matches must be completed during this weekend.

The handicapper has made the following reductions in handicaps:—G. Challis now 18-14, M. Manson 20-15, K. McCalmont 24-18, F. Shearer 16-12.

The draw for the ladies’ championship games is now displayed in the club house and members are asked to play these games as soon as possible.
