A Masterton visitor to Napier is Mrs W. N. Kummer. Mrs W. G. Eising, of Makomako, is a visitor to Napier. Mrs N. H. Kummer, of Masterton, is a visitor to Hastings. Private E. Newman, of the Third Echelon, and Mrs Newman, of Wellington, are visiting Mr and Mrs Newman, Senr, Invercargill. Mrs Newman is a daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Denbee, of Masterton. Mr and Mrs Percy McCormack arc the guests of the former’s parents, Mr and Mrs T. McCormack, Kuripuni. Mr P. McCormack is a member of the Third Echelon and is at present on leave. A quiet wedding was celebrated at Knox Church, Masterton, recently, when Miss Phyllis G. Madsen, second daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Madsen, Pine Street, Masterton, was married to Mr Walter C. Johansen, younger son of Mr and Mrs P. Johansen, of Carterton. A pioneer of the West Coast of the North Island, Mrs Margaret Wallace, widow of the late Mr Charles Wallace, Johnsonville, died recently, aged 81. She was born in Wanganui, where her father, Mr Toole, kept a store in Market Square, dealing largely with the troops engaged in the Maori wars of that era. She was married in her ’teens under romantic circumstances. in a boatshed on the Wanganui River, on which her husband was engaged in military operations. After the Maori war they resided in Patea and afterward in Otaki, going to Johnsonville 40 years ago. Her husband died in 1934.
