SALVATION ARMY

TRAINING COLLEGE LEADERS VISIT MASTERTON SERVICES DURING WEEKEND. ADDRESS ON SOCIAL WORK. The visit to Masterton during the weekend of Brigadier Florence Birks, Principal, and Brigadier N. Smith, Training Officer, of the Salvation Army College. Wellington, together with a party of cadets proved an occasion of more than usual interest. A series cf special meetings and services was held. On Saturday evening, before a large attendance, the cadets gave a most pleasing programme, featuring glee singing, elocution, dialogues, and tableaux. Miss Lora Dutton, L.T.C.L. contributed choice selections on the piano and Mr Steve Mason gave items on the xylophone. Every item was greatly appreciated. ‘'Social Silhouettes” was the subject of an address of much interest given yesterday afternoon by Brigadier Birks, before a large attendance of the public. She outlined the extensive operations of the Salvation Army’s social work in all parts of the world. The Brigadier, who posssesses great powers of oratory, made a strong appeal to her listeners, as she related many stories of the triumph of social work amongst the many unfortunates. Mrs G. G. Tolhurst, who presided, introduced Brigadier Birks to the gathering. On the motion of Mrs Church, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the speaker and Mrs Fairbrother moved a vote of thanks to Mrs Tolhurst for presiding. The services yesterday, conducted by Brigadier Birks and Smith assisted by the cadets, were well attended. The happy, bright services were enjoyed by all who attended. Brigadier Smith was the speaker at the morning service, and at the evening service Brigadier Birks gave a special address on “A Drama in Two Acts," in which she gave a powerful exposition of the Gospel message. The whole series of gatherings was voted a great success. The party paid a visit to Whatman Home this morning, and left for Wellington this afternoon.
