TABLE tennis EKETAHUNA DEFEAT KURIPUNI. (“Times-Age” Special.) Over 20 members of the Kuripuni (Masterton) Table Tennis Club visited Eketahuna on Thursday night to play a match again the local club. The majority of the games were very evenly contested. Eketahuna won by 26 sets. 53 games to 20 sets. 44 games. Mr C. Hausman, president of the local club, extended to the visitors a warm welcome, and thanked them for coming such a distance to play the match. On behalf of the visitors, Mr L. Jones congratulated Eketahuna on their win and expressed thanks for the warm hospitality extended to them. It was the wish of the Kuripuni Club that a return match be played in the near future. COUNTY COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council was held yesterday, there being present Councillors J. B. Carruthers (chair), C. T. Richardson, G. Haulbrooke, F. Goggin, C. Davie, G. Bailey, R. W. Kebbell. H. N. Kebbell, J. J. Dougherty and A. J. Perry. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. P. Davies. Accounts amounting to £2688 2s lid were passed for payment. It'was resolved that a grant of £6 be made to the Dental Clinic funds. The State Advances Corporation wrote agreeing to lend the council £5OOO for rural housing purposes. The Lady Galway Patriotic Guild acknowledged parcels of clothes forwarded for refugees by residents of the county. It was decided to draw the attention of the Dairy Executive Commission to the duplication of cream lorries operating on the county roads. As a result of complaints made by the ranger in respect to owners refusing to register their full quota of dogs, it was decided to inaugurate a system of notification giving owners a certain period to comply with the law before proceedings were taken. The clerk-treasurer, Mr W. N. Richardson, reported as follows: The balances of the council’s various accounts at date are as follow: County Fund account, dr £2651 16s Bd, less Imprest Account, cr £365 4s 8d; dr £2286 12s; Bridges Loan £BOOO Account, cr £2507 6s lOd; Workers' Dwelling Loan, £1550 Account, cr £42 Ils 6d; Workers’ Dwelling Loan, £lOOO Account, cr £4l 14s 6d; Bridge Fund Account, cr £263. The County Fund Account shows an improvement in its balance as compared with last month, of £1707 6s Id. The County Fund Account, at this stage last year, was in debit to the extent of £2065 18s 2d. Receipts for the past month totalled £3400 9s 2d. All amounts of subsidy due as at June 30. 1940, have now been paid over. Rate demands are in course of preparation and will be posted out on due date. September I, 1940. The county engineer reported on riding work as follows: Mangaraupi Road: The Factory-Atea section has been reshaped and given a good coat
of crushed metal, and work is in hand on the central section. At date some 344 cubic yards have been crushed, and placed on the road. The first-men-tioned section has always been a rough one, and the work carried out should effect a marked benefit and give lasting service. South No. 2 road: Work on this road has gone as far as funds will reasonably permit in this financial year, and a considerable improvement has been possible. In addition to corner widening and reshaping some 475 cubic yards of crushed metal have been run out. North Road: The dangerous corner near Moss’s Road was cut back and the road realigned over a distance of approximately ten chains. A start has been made with the metalling programme for this road, but at date only a limited quantity is in place. The portable crusher was transferred to the Hamua pit from Kaiparoro. and a start made with the East Riding metalling programme. Ha-mua-Rongomai Road: The power shovel was employed in cutting back some of the worst corners on the Rongomai side. These were shaped up with the grader and given a coat of crushed metal in every case. A new pipe culvert was laid near the summit of the hill. The Hamua end was trimmed and heavily graded as far as Anderson’s. The first mile of the road has been metalled with crushed metal from the Hamua pit. Wingate’s Road was graded and widened in a few places. The Castle Hill Road was graded and a new track into the riverbed formed on Messrs Dickens’ property. Personal. Mrs L. E.
