CARTERTON
PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE SOCIAL TO SOLDIERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Carterton Patriotic Committee for the purpose of entertaining soldiers of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force was held in the Borough Council Chambers last evening. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided, and there were also present Messrs A. T. Murray, W. A. Hart, E. McKenzie. Geo Brown and Mrs E. M. Gayfer and Miss C. Berrill. Apologies lor absence were received from Messrs A. E. Reid, H. T. Leete and the Rev V/. J. Couling. It was resolved to entertain soldiers on leave in the King’s Theatre. Carterton, on Friday evening. Members oi the Carterton Savage Club will provide a first class concert programme during the evening. It was decided that the committee appointed purchase presents for Carterton soldiers. Every effort is being made by the committee to make the function one to be remembered by soldiers and citizens alike. The speakers for the evening will be the chairman of the South County Council (Mr F. Court), the Mayor. Mr D. L. Taverner, and the president of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Mr A. T. Murray. “parcel'evening” BRIDE-TO-BE HONOURED. The Parkvale Hall was filled last evening on the occasion of a "parcel evening” and dance held in honour of Miss Winnie Carter, daughter of Mrs McKinnon, of Parkvale, on the eve of her marriage. Miss Carter has been for some time engaged as a dental nurse in the Auckland district. Mr Dan Jensen as M.C. kept the dancing going merrily. Excellent dance music was provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton (Carter- ... ton) and Mr G. Harding, of Masterton. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by ;liss M. Adlam and. Private C. Bliss and a lucky spot waltz by Miss June Williams and Mr Pat Jensen. At a suitable interval Mr E. T. Bliss asked Miss Carter to accept and open the many gift parcels, which she did amid applause. Sergeant G. Olsen suitably returned thanks on behalf of Miss Carter. Supper was provided by the ladies of the Parkvale district. The gathering was brought to a close with the singing of ‘‘Auld Lang Syne.” Sergeant Olsen and Miss Carter are to be married today. Schools Football Tourney. A schools football tournament is being held today in Carterton. Thirty teams are competing from various parts of the district and some excellent football is being displayed. . Personal. The late Mr A. Daysh, whose death occurred on Thusday, was a life member of the Carterton Racing Club. At one time he raced with success the well-known gelding Master Prince, by Master Agnes, which ran second to A. Leicester’s Manadava, in the second hack and hunters' steeplechase, at the Wellington Racing Club's winter meetin 1900. / The father and mother of the late Mr Alf Daysh, who died in Carterton this week, arrived in Wellington in 1840 or 1841 with their children. Mr Daysh. Senr, died at Taratahi at the age of 96 years. The late Mrs John Rayner, of Taratahi, was a daughter of Mr Daysh, Senr. Extraordinary Co-incidence. A realistic episode was experienced at the Regent Theatre on Wednesday evening. During the screening of a picture an earthquake scene was being projected on the screen, when the reality of the picture was brought forcibly home to all present by a real earthquake shock occurring.
