PADDY’S MARKET
BRISK BUSINESS REPORTED AT TOWN HALL GOODS IN READY DEMAND. RED CROSS EFFORT IN AID OF LOCAL FUNDS. Gaily beflagged and packed with attractive well-laden stalls the Municipal Hall, where a Paddy's Market is being held today, presents a very pleasant contrast to the conditions outside. The market has been organised by the Masterton branch of the Red Cross Society in aid of local funds. The hall is a hive of industrious workers and a marked atmosphere of cheery co-op-eration is in evidence. Flags and bunting strike a strong patriotic note and with many colourful stalls present a pleasing effect. From the opening at 9 o'clock this morning the hall has been thronged with patrons, and in a few minutes the meat and other stalls were heavily depleted. Further stocks of meat, however, are arriving continuously and are being sold as fast as they arrive. The produce, fancy, cake and flower stalls all report brisk business and a large and energetic staff is attending to all wants promptly and efficiently. The following are the results of the cooking competitions: Best Madeira cake. Mrs T. Jordan 1. Fruit cake, Glenwood Hospital.
“In both classes the entries were exceptionally good and reflected the highest credit on Masterton's cooks.” commented the judge, Mr G. Dawson. He added that as competition was so keen, it was unfortunate that there were no other awards.
