“CAPTAIN CALAMITY.” In a roistering, rough and tumble role, as the fighting, singing skipper of the “Marigold,” known in every port in the South Seas, George Houston, popular screen baritone and star of “Wallaby Jim of the Islands,” scores yet another hit in Action Pictures all technicolour “Captain Calamity,” which will be shown tonight at the Cosy Theatre. “Captain Calamity” may be said to be one of the first films to bring natural colour to the screen, for the beautiful backgrounds of the South Sea Islands form an entrancing setting for the adventures of Captain Bill Jones, better known as Captain Calamity. The native melodies, swaying palms, and island beauties are brought to the screen in all their glamour, and must provide a genuine thrill for every filmgoer. One of America’s most vicious rackets, which, it is estimated, costs United States citizens millions of dollars each year, is dramatically revealed in Universal’s “Missing Evidence,” the associate feature. The film deals with the activities of a nation-wide underworld syndicate which sells counterfeit sweepstakes tickets. Preston Foster is seen as a heroic G-Man assigned the task of bringing the crooks to justice. Federal Bureau of Investigation methods are said to be clearly shown in the picture. Sweepstakes ticket counterfeiters are also revealed at work. Also screening is episode 13 of the serial. “The Lone Ranger Rides Again.”
