GREEK TANKER SUNK

CARRYING OIL TO ITALIAN ISLANDS ACTION BY BRITISH NAVAL FORCES. AIR ATTACKS BEATEN OFF. An Admiralty communique transmitter by Daventry states that a Greek tanker under charter to the Italian Government and carrying 300 tons of petrol and 200 tons of lubricating oil to the Dodecanese Islands was intercepted by British naval, forces. A heavy Italian air attack developed and the British forces were compelled to sink the tanker by gunfire. This encounter probably accounts for highly-coloured Italian claims to have scored, hits on several British warships. There was no damage and there were no casualties on the British ships.
