Ten Degrees of Frost. A frost of ten degrees was recorded in Masterton this morning. Two Bankruptcies. Two bankruptcies were registered in thhe Wairarapa last month. Vital Statistics. The following are the vital statistics registered at the Masterton Courthouse last month, figures for July, 1939, being given in parentheses: Births, 10 (8); deaths, 11 (9); marriages, 11 (7). Creditors’ Meeting Lapses. A creditors’ meeting in the bankrupt estate of James Arthur Millward, restauranteur, of Masterton, called by the deputy official assignee, Mr A. D. Low, this morning lapsed for want of a quorum. Drivers’ Licences. The Masterton Borough Council issued 63 drivers’ licences during last month, the total for the current year being 2097. The Masterton County Council issued 37 licences, the total issued to date being 1170.
Sharp Earthquake. Masterton and district experienced a sharp shock of earthquake last night at 9.10 o’clock. It was preceded by a loud rumble. ' Another slight earthquake was felt about 10 o’clock. Meeting Postponed.
Because most of the members will be helping with the Paddy’s Market in the Town Hall, it has been decided to postpone tomorrow’s meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League till Friday, August 9. Maori Pa Opening. The re-opening of the Te Ore Ore Native Pa which was to have taken place on August 7 has been postponed, as a delay has occurred in the making of the carvings. The competition which was to have been drawn on that date will still take place. Building Permits. The Masterton Borough Council issued 6 building permits for an estimated value of £1167 (including one new dwelling) last month, as compared with seven permits for £3335 (two new buildings) for July, 1939. The Masterton County Council issued one permit for £2O last month. Women Police. An item of £l4OO for women police appears in the Supplementary Estimates, and when these were under consideration in the House of Representatives yesterday, Mr Forbes (Opposition, Hurunui), asked whether any appointments had been made and how many it was intended to appoint. The Minister of Finance. Mr Nash, said the item had been put on the Estimates because the Minister in Charge of the Police Department, Mr Fraser, contemplated appointing a certain nummer. No appointments had yet been made, but something would be done shortly. Phrase and Phraser. ( A witty sally by the member for Waitomo, Mr W. J. Broadfoot, was enjoyed fin the House of Representatives yesterday. Pulled up by Mr Speaker for repeating a phrase the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) had inadvertently used: ‘■The member for Lee,” Mr Broadfoot said he was sorry. He was afraid, he added, that he had become tangled up with the phrase. Mr Fraser: "The phrase seems to have caught your imagination." “It wasn’t the phrase," Mr Broadfoot replied quickly, “it was the phraser.” Mr Fraser joined as heartily as any in the laughter that followed.
