SCOUT ACTIVITIES
ST. MATTHEW’S GROUP ANNUAL MEETING HELD LAST NIGHT. YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENT. The annual meeting of the St. Matthew's Scout group was hold in Masterton last night. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich presided over a large attendance of supporters. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W. Marchbank. Askew, Sanson and Mrs Marchbank. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President. Archdeacon E. J. Rich; vice-pre-sidents. Mesdames N. Beetham. H. G. Moser. B. V. Skeet. Miss K. Morrison. Messrs W. A. Clarke. G. L. Thomas. S. L. P. Free. A. L. Askew, J. F. Jaine, J. V. Dolan. W. Marchbank; committee. Mesdames G. Dickel. W. Marchbank. Messrs A. M. Sanson. W. L. Hunter, H. Braggins; secretary. Mr J. K. Jaine; auditor. Mr A. D. Low. In moving the adoption of the reports Archdeacon Rich stated that they contained items of great interest and the work carried out had been well worth while. The troops showed the true scout spirit and self-reliance. He derived great pleasure from the fact that parents spoke so highly of the training their sons were receiving. In referring to the work of the movement in war time Archdeacon Rich stated that it flourished in crises because it was founded by men who had been through such crises. In conclusion the speaker congratulated scouters and the committee on their efforts. In seconding the motion Mr W. A Clarke qndorsed Archdeacon Rich’s remarks and expressed the hope that the Rover Crew would again come into being. The donation of a cup to the patrol with the best attendance at the fortnightly church parades was offered by Mr J. F. Jaine and accepted with thanks. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Mr Knight, Opaki Road. Masterton, for his services as an examiner. Tribute to Pilot-Officer Clive Wylie who was posted missing on active service some time ago, was paid by Archdeacon Rich, who referred to his excellent personal qualities and his work for the scout movement in the district. Mr Clarke also spoke on Pilot-Offi-cer Wylie's work, and it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to his mother. The meeting was opened and closed with prayer, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the chair. The secretary, Mr J. K. Jaine. stated in his report that during the year Mr A. H. Green had resigned from the position of secretary, after serving for three years. The thanks of the committee were due to him for his good work. All sections of the group were working very satisfactorily. Thanks were due to the St. Matthew's Vestry, the Press, to all friend and supporters and scouters for their good services. In reporting on the work of the scout troop for the year ending June 30, Mr P. R. Isles, scoutmaster, stated that parades had been held regularly throughout the year and the usual scouting practices carried out. The troop won the Beetham Shield at the Rally held at Carterton in conjunction with the Centennial celebrations. The two Cub Pack reports, signed by E. C. Braggins and J. Askew state that good progress has been made in the work of the packs and continued interest was shown by the Cubs.
