Of Late Events in Japan STATEMENT BY LORD HALIFAX NO FOUNDATION FOR JAPANESE ALLEGATIONS Speaking- in the House of Lords, a Daventry broadcast states, the Foreign Secretary, Lord Halifax, said there was no foundation whatsoever for the Japanese allegations that the men arrested in Japan formed part of a British espionage network throughout that country. The British Government, he said, was totally unable to accept the suggestion that Mr Lox had committed suicide because he knew he would be unable to clear himself of a charge of espionage. The British Ambassador in Tckio had pointed out to the Japanese Foreign Minister the very serious view of the incident which must be taken by Britain.
SOUTH CHINA PORTS JAPANESE ARMY OPERATIONS. HONG KONG, July 30. Japanese forces, continuing the operation designed to close all ports through which war materials might reach the Chinese armies and guerillas, landed at Swabue at dawn. Other Japanese advanced inland and attacked the Chinese who are holding the town of Chenhai. JAPANESE CENSORS INSTALLED IN FRENCH CONCESSION. DEVELOPMENT AT SHANGHAI. MOSCOW, July 30. The radio says that Japanese officials have been installed at the post office in the French Concession in Shanghai and intend to censor all mail.
