ENTIRELY NEW CAR
1940 HILLMAN MINX. For so long aptly known as the world’s most successful light car, the Hillman Minx has enjoyed this appellation by virtue of the inherent sturdiness and roadworthiness of its basic design; now, the 1940 Minx introduces a completely new standard of strength and safety—a standard which a few years ago would have been considered impossible. This has been achieved by the unique feature of construction which "mates" the chassis and body so as to form what is virtually one rigid structure —a new technique of body and frame construction. In addition to enormous strength, another big merit accompanies the new design namely, low weight, and the 1940 Minx scales almost a cwt, less than its predecessors with benefit, to general road performance and economy of running. A still further excellent feature is that, the floor of the car is monopiece, completely free from joints through which dust and fumes might enter. The body of the new Hillman Minx offers many advantages over that of previous models. Chief of these is. perhaps, luggage accommodation, for an outstandingly large locker —of no less than 111 cubic feet capacity—provides double as much enclosed space as formerly. The lid of the new locker gives access to both the luggage compartment and to that housing the spare wheel and tools. The monopiecc bonnet of the new Hillman Minx lifts bodily with the radiator grille, being
attached to the scuttle by concealed hinges. The radiator grille is new, and of modern styling, while at the same time retaining the familiar Hillman Minx resemblance. The front wing design is entirely new and the headlamps are mounted direct into the front wings. Inside the new Hillman Minx there are many interesting new features. The engine of the new Hillman Minx, although basically the same as the well-proved 9.8 h.p. four cylinder unit of previous years, has benefited considerably from development, which has improved its power, smoothness of running, reliability and economy. There is a I'our-specd gearbox with synchromesh to second, third and lop gears, and a quick checking and filling device has been provided, enabling both to be accomplished from the driving compartment. The steering gear is of new design, and the steering box is mounted on the top of the frame side member; this gives more ground clearance and brings tlie wheel into a more vortical position. Prolonged life to steering ball joints is assured by an improved method of sealing them against dirt and dust. Tlie brakes have a new and simple means of adjustment, and the handbrake lever is now located between the front seats. The electrical system is of 12 volts. A constant voltage control is provided, ensuring a charging rale in accordance with the battery's requirements. The ignition key of "Yale" type, acts as master switch, and. when oil'. renders trafficators, windscreen wipers, etc., inoperative. It also fits door lock and luggage locker. The 1940 Hillman Minx is available in three models —4-door touring saloon. 4-door special touring saloon and 4 door de luxe saloon.
