SEED POTATOES
SPROUTING SETS. The advisibality of sprouting the planting sets of potatoes has so often been emphasised that it is unnecessary to dwell upon that question. It is possible to overdo even so excellent a piece of preparatory work. If the sets are allowed to remain 'in the trays too long, or are kept in too high a temperature. they will develop shoots to a greater extent than is desirable. The amount of growth made must beat the expense of the tuber itself. Should too much growth be made the tubers will shrivel. The tender shoots are almost sure to be broken when covering with soil. They will also be ■ liable to rot before they can restore themselves to robust health. Keep the planting sets in a cool but light situation and should there be any sign of wrinking of the tubers, a light spraying with tepid water will counteract the detrimental dryness.
