OPTIMIST CLUB

WEEKLY MEETING. AN INTERESTING DEBATE. There was a fair attendance at the weekly tea of the Masterton Optimist Club held in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms, last night. As Chief Optimist Murray Daniell had to leave the meeting early on account of a business engagement, the chair was taken by Optimist M. Finlayson. Sheriff E. J. Esler was allowed a little extra time to conduct his “pocketlightening session,” with good results to the “cat.” There was no speaker for the evening, it having been decided to hold a club night. On the suggestion .of Optimist S. L. Hatch an "Oxford debate” was held and proved very entertaining. The debate commenced with an oration on barnacles and concluded with a motion that a fund be raised in New Zealand to supply the Arabs with modern arms. The debate was an innovation in Masterton and it is expected that more will be held in the future.
