HARRIER ACTIVITIES

KIATERE CLUB PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (Contributed.) In connection with the Kiatere Harrier Club's participation in the provincial championships on Saturday W. Burns put up a great run to finish in 12th position. He is running very well this season and it is satisfactory to see him coming into his own at last. W. MacDonald ran a very solid race. He is approaching the veteran class, but is still a hard runner to beat. W. Burgess was only having his third serious run this season, but was well up all the same. R. Greeks was feeling the effects of the motor trip in the first lap, but put in a splendid second lap run to gain 10th place. Al. MacDonald ran his best race yet to finish strongly. Alec MacDonald still needs some hard training. W. Teahan ran up to form and is an acquisition to the club. L. Bird was the surprise of the day. He has been improving rapidly in his running. R. Searanche found the going too heavy and pulled out after he had covered one lap. Even adults usually find their first appearance in a big inter-club race something of a trial, so the Kiatere junior team, by far the youngest set of competitors in the race, are to be congratulated on their showing on Saturday. They gained valuable experience in competition with other runners. N. Jacobsen, though handicapped by car sickness and the slippery trail, ran very strongly in the later stages of the race. F. Sexton ran his usual good race. He should make a name for himself in the harriers. C. Summers has been running in the senior section this season and found the shorter distance more to his liking. He ran a good race in spite of losing his shoes. I. Summers was unfortunately seized with cramp in the stomach, but he kept on gamely. He is developing into a really good harrier. S. Pickett ran bettor than he has done lately. Altogether the club has good reason to be pleased with its showing in what is, after all, the main harrier test of the year.
