MONTEREY INCIDENT
REFUSAL TO COMPLETE LOADING. INVESTIGATION AT AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. July 29. Investigation into the action of waterside workers who refused to continue loading operations on the Matson liner Monterey on Saturday evening is being conducted by the Auckland waterfront controller. Captain Stanich. w-ho will make a report to the Waterfront. Commission. None of the men had been excluded from the waterfront for their action, as had occurred after waterside workers had refused the commission's request to work extended hours on Julj’ 13, said Captain Stanich. Men permanently employed by the stevedore company in charge of loading operations continued with the work after waterside workers had left the job, and they were assisted by cranemen, who continued to work the cranes. The cranemen were employed by the Auckland Harbour Board. The agents of the Matson Line, Henderson and Macfarlane, did not expect that loading would not be completed by 6 o’clock, but one of the derricks on the ship broke down and loading operations were delayed. When men were likely to be required after 6 p.m. the shipping company had to inform them before 10 o’clock the same morning, but this had not be done, as it was expected that the work would have been finished in time. POWERS USED. LOADING HOURS EXTENDED AT MIRAMAR. WELLINGTON, This Day. When it was intimated last week that waterside workers did not intend to work a collier lying at Miramar for extended hours beyond the time customary for many years, the Waterfront Control Commission exercised its powers to have the work carried out. It is understood that there was no actual refusal to work, but the men did not want to do so. It was intimated that if they did not work the commission would take action against them. The extended hours were observed. There are certain difficulties to be overcome at Miramar, an isolated wharf - where the provision of meals and accommodation for eating them is concerned. Arrangements are being made to provide suitable facilities for the men when they are required to work extra time.
