FIRE IN CHURCH

SHINGLE ROOF DAMAGED. The dangerous character of a shingle roof was exemplified by a fire which broke out early this afternoon in the roof of the Methodist Church, Masterton. Fortunately, the brigade was able to check the fire before it obtained a hold and little damage was done. The brigade received the call at about 1.45 o’clock and two engines turned out under the Superintendent. Mr T. B. Clark. A lead of hose was quickly brought to bear on the seat of the outbreak in the shingles on the western side of the roof. It is considered probable that a spark from a rubbish fire at the rear of the building lighted on the shingles, which became ignited.
