GOLD AND GREEN BALL AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. ("Times-Age” Special.) One of the most outstanding social events of the season was held at the Hastwell Hall on Wednesday, viz, the Gold and Green Ball. The function was sponsored by the local Mutual Improvement Association, an auxilliary organisation of the Mormon Church. The entire proceeds are to be donated to the patriotic fund for the sick and wounded. Mr Major Mason and Mrs Heke* Boyd. presidents of the local Young Men's and Young Women’s Associations, respectively, were in charge of arrangements. A feature of the ball was the crowning of Miss Francis Valetta Ngatuere as Queen of the 1940 Gold and Green Ball, by Elder George R. Biesinger, President of the New Zealand Mutual Improvement Association. The hall was beautifully decorated with natural greenery and ferns, making an excellent setting for the crowning. The programme for the ceremony included Hawaiian songs by the chorus, hula dances by Misses Fannie Ngatuere and Bessie Thompson, a solo by Mr Mason Ngatuere and a trio by Misses J. Ngatuere, F. Ngatuere and Mr Mason Ngatuere. Other items of interest were action songs presented by the local Mutual Improvement Association group and an exhibition of the tangp, ' Senorita Mia,” by four couples from the Mutual Improvement Association. An unusually good supper provided for the large crowd, and was supervised by Mrs Una Thompson, assisted by the ladies of the community. The Mutual Improvement Association is sponsoring approximately twenty Gold and Green Balls this year throughout New Zealand, the proceeds from which are to be donated to the patriotic funds.
