WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION CLUB COMPETITION FINAL. WIN FOR ST. MATTHEW'S The Wairarapa Badminton Association's inter-club competition was brought. 1o a close last night when St Matthew’s won their third match to come through the competition without a loss. Masterton is runner-up with two wins and one loss, having beaten Martinborough last night, followed by Red Star with one win and two losses, and M'arlinborough three losses. St Matthew’s and Red Star tried conclusions in what proved to be an interesting match played at St Matthew’s courts. St Matthew’s won six matches and received two by default, to Star’s four. Supper was served by members of St Matthew's Chib. Details are as follow (St. Matthew’s players being mentioned first in each instance: —

Combined doubles: Miss Richards and Carle beat Miss Holtham and Rolf by default; Mrs Ninnes and Ninnes beat Miss Dixon, and Stilburn 21-17: Miss Russell and Cameron lost to Mrs Dixon and Peterson 10-21; Miss Boyd anc« Harrington lost to Miss Watson and Whilmshurst, 14-21; Miss Johnston and Volheim beat Miss Anderson and McKay 21-14; Miss Munro and Peters beat Miss Harrington and Osborn 21-13. Ladies’ doubles: Misses Richards and Boyd beat Mrs Dixon and Miss Dixon. 21-18; Mrs Ninnes and Miss Russell beat Misses Holtham and Harrington 21-17; Misses Johnston and Munro lost to Misses Watson and Anderson. 4-21. Men's doubles: Messrs Ninnes'and Carle beat Roff and Peterson by default; Cameron and Harrington lost to Stilburn and Whilmshurst 16-21; Volheim and Peters beat Orsborn and McKay, 21-4. In the combined doubles G. B. Peterson showed good form and played his usual heady game in ' company with Mrs Dixon. Mr and Mrs Ninnes also combined very well. In many of the games there were some very entertaining rallies. Miss Boyd is showing very promising form. She possesses many excellent strokes. Miss U. Holtham played a solid game with Miss Harrington in the ladies' doubles. Miss Richards was well on her game and exploited her powerful smash to good effect. H. Volheim and B. Peters combined well, the former making full use of drop shots and the latter his forceful smashes. W. Stilburn played an impressive game and partnered by B. Whilmshurst the pair went particularly well in their men’s doubles. B. Crsborn and J. McKay showed that they possessed a good knowledge of the game, but lack of match experience with the former was a handicap. W. Harrington and N. Cameron went quite well. Miss Munro and Miss Johnston played good games, particularly in the combined doubles. Misses Dixon, Watson, Anderson and Harrington were on a par and showed up conspicuously in the Red Star team, and Miss Russell played particularly well in the St Matthew’s team.

An oustanding fault in many games was the tendency of many sure “kills’’ going amiss through lack of combination. Although some players are able to smash with their back-hand a great many cannot, and instead of allowing their partners the shot ’there were many instances where points were lost through players trying to finish off a rally with a back-hand smash, only for the shot to be picked up and the point lost in the ensuing rally. Many, with the exceptions in (ho more experienced players. smashed with their arms and body instead of their wrists. On both sides, in particularly the ladies, serves were sent into the net time after time again through being in too much of a hurry.
