Mrs V. E. Donald, of Lansdowne, has returned from a visit to Levin. Mrs A. Gibson, of Rongotea. has been the guest of Mrs Allen, of Kohinui.
Mrs J. C. Bidwill, of Featherston, is on a visit to Napier.
Mrs Jennings has been appointed representative of the Makuri Women’s Institute on the Pahiatua Emergency Committee.
Mrs B. Canter, a former resident of Pongaroa. and now of Rongotea, is staying with her sister, Mrs S. C. Aplin. Pongaroa. Mrs S. L. Kent, of Sanson, and Mrs A. L. Pickering. Feilding, spent the weekend as the guests of Mrs P. R. Kent Pongaroa. A successful candidate in the recent A.T.C.L. elocution theory examination held in Wellington was Miss Elizabeth Thomas, of Masterton. who was a pupil of Miss Betty Coleman. L.T.C.L. A. quiet wedding was solemnised al St Patrick’s Church. Masterton, recently, when Rita Isabel, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs L. T. Hawke, Solway, was married to Peter, eldest son of Mr and Mrs A. E. Cobb. Albert Street, Masterton. The ceremony was performed by the Rev Father Dillon.
At a gathering of settlers at Kohinui opportunity was taken to farewell Mr and Mrs A. Olliver, two well-known residents who are shortly leaving the district. On behalf of the settlers of the district. Mr Sutton presented Mr and Mrs Olliver with a small token of esteem.
The following officers have been elected in connection with the Pahiatua branch of the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild: President, Mrs A. W. Bisset; vice-presidents, Mrs S. K. Siddells and Mrs H. Paterson; committee, Mesdames S. Macrae, G. F. O’Rourke, W. R. Richardson, H. A. Bick, J. Smith, C. S. Carrad, W. H. Watson. J. Whiting, M. A. Robertson, S. T. Tinney J. W. Greaves and J. W. Sturton; associate committee, Mesdames A. H. Ellmers and E. Miller (Kohinui), J. Anderson (Ngaturi), S. Wylie (Kaitawa). J. R. Nelson (Pori), and the president of each Women’s Institute in the district; secretary, Mrs W. B. Gray; treasurer, Mrs S. G. Hogg.
MEETING AT PONGAROA. Mrs Mayman presided over the monthly meeting of the Akitio Women’s Patriotic Society, held at Pongaroa, there being 19 members present. Apologies for absence were 'received from Mesdames Ryan, Jensen. Moynihan and Eunson. Correspondence included an acknowledgment from the Red Cross Headquarters of a box of bandages and various hospital requirements, and a letter from the secretary of the Masterton Provincial Centre, indicating that there was a depot there, where various knitted goods would be acceptable. A further supply of wool for mittens was received from headquarters and distributed at the meeting. Mrs Ruskell’s resignation was received with regret. Red Cross work was continued and the following articles were made:— Twenty hot water bag covers, three many tailed bandages, five face cloths, eight T bandages, 39 miscellaneous bandages, 84 eye bandages, two pairs bed socks, one pair mittens. The following articles were also forwarded to Masterton. Two scarves, four balaclavas, three pairs socks. There was an excellent response to the appeal for refugee clothing in connection with the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild. Members were asked to make peggy squares (six inches), to be made into bed coverings. Six parcels for Akitio soldiers who left with the Second Echelon were packed and contained the following:— Fruit cake, pair socks, razor blades, chewing gum. fruit salts, handkerchief, writing material, coffee and milk. It was reported that the senior girls of the Pongaroa school were being instructed in bandage making, etc. Mesdames Aplin, Featonby and H. Herbert were the hostesses.
