CARTERTON

DAIRY INDUSTRY PREPARATIONS FOR NEW SEASON ("Times-Age” Special.) Cheese factories in district in the Carterton district are being got ready for the new season. Most factories will receive a greater quantity of milk than was the case last year, in keeping with the intention to increase production during the war period. The weather at present being experienced is certainly favourable to an early start for the new season. Employee Injured. An employee of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board, Mr Ardrey, yesterday met with an accident. It appears that he and Mr Lane were engaged in removing an electric range from the showroom and in carrying it through the doorway Mr Ardrey stumbled on a mat with the result that he lost his grip of the range which fell upon him inflicting a severe wound in the face. Mr Ardrey was taken to Dr. W. J. C. Wells surgery where it was found necessary to put three stitches in the wound. Order of Odd Fellows. The annual meeting of Wairarapa Past Grands’ Lodge of Odd Fellows will be held in Carterton tonight. The business will include the election of officers for the ensuing year. Pruning of Borough Trees. The borough staff are busily engaged in pruning the Rowan trees in the several streets of the borough. New Funeral Service. Messrs Gillespie and Darke, High Street, Carterton, have established an funeral direction service and are building a modern chapel in keeping with their business. Funerals will be carried out by means of a motor service, and in every respect the business will be conducted on most approved lines. The members of the new firm have been fully trained in the methods of modern funeral direction. The telephone numbers of the firm are 52 (day) and 140 (night). Other particulars are advertised elsewhere. Card Parties. An enjoyable card party was held in the Band Room under the auspices of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union in aid of the soldier comforts fund. There was not a very large attendance. The prizes were won as follow: —Ladies: Mesdames A. Jensen, 1; W. Ticehurst, 2. Men: Mr Morgan, !; Miss Bailey, 2. Last evening the weekly card party conducted ’by the/Boy Scouts for patriotic purposes was fairly well attended. The prizes were won as follows: — Ladies: Mrs F. O’Keefe. 1; Mrs Berney, 2. Men: Mr F. Hyde, 1; Mr Morgan, 2. Aggregate prizes: Mrs Hawhai, 1; Mrs Hodder, 2. Supper was provided.
