SHANGHAI INCIDENT
JAPAN & UNITED STATES AT ODDS OVER ARREST OF GUNMEN BY MARINES. APOLOGY SOUGHT & REFUSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) SHANGHAI, July 24. It is understood that Mr W. R. Peck, of the United States Embassy, has sent a Note to Major-General Miura, who commands the Japanese Gendarmes. emphasising that the United States Marines were making an effort to protect General Nishio, the Japanese Commander in China, when they arrested plain clothes gunmen in the American sector recently. Well-in-formed circles said the Japanese do not consider this reply satisfactory, but want an outright apology. A Japanese Navy spokesman, referring to anti-American meetings, said the meetings will not occur if each incident is settled in a proper way. He is apparently inviting Mr Peck to apologise. It is reliably stated that the Mayor. Mr Fusiaoen. has sent a Note to the United States Consul-General. Mr Butrick, requesting the American authorities to deport Americans listed by the Nanking puppet Government. Mr Butrick is taking no action and it is believed he will ignore the Note.
