Montreal.—Strange as it may seem, Canada was the first country to use the railway in connection with military operations, according to the Canadian National Railways. During the Papineau rebellion of 1837-38 troops were transported by rail from Laprairie to St John’s. Quebec, over the Champlain and St Lawrence Railroad, opened in 1936. and now forming part of the Canadian National System. The first use of the railway on a large scale in wartime was in the United States during the Civil War.
