On the Easy List. Court Yard, which was brought down when Cottingham fell at the front of the stands in the Dromore Hack Steeplechase at Ashburton was found to be suffering from concussion afterwards. while his legs were also knocked about. He is being exercised on a beach and is due back in R. Register’s stable after the South Canterbury Hunt meeting. . Court Yard is one of the lightweights in the Grand National, but he can be counted out as far as that race is concerned. Hanlon’s Record. It is seldom that a galloper compiles such a record of consistency for such a meagre return as has Hanlon, the southern performer, who won the Morven Handicap at Waimate. Hanlon, who carries the colours of his trainer, D. J. McDonald, began racing as a two-year-old. but his owner-trainer had to wait two years for a win. In the meantime, however, Hanlon has compiled a very good record, his 73 starts to date having produced 15 wins, 14 seconds, and 15 thirds, a total of 44 placed performances. For these efforts over six seasons the monetary return, including trophies, has been £1790 10s. Much Improved Form. With three successes within a month. Little Robin has revealed much improved form this winter and his record this season is four wins and a second for £550. He is at his best in heavy ground, but he has raced prominently also in good going'. A Difficult. Season. The National Hunt season recently concluded in England was one of the most difficult on record, not only because of the war. but from the fact that the winter was one of the most severe for many years. Lord Stalbridge as owner and trainer of Bogskar. headed the winning list with £4924, secured from the Grand National winner's four successes this year. Owen Anthony. trainer of Solford. Roman Hackle, Wonersh and Kilstar. took second place with 11 wins worth £2570. and Ivor Anthony was third with 20 wins and stakes valued at .£2487. A Strenuous Mission. Catalogue winner of three Winter Cups and the Melbourne Cup, is to till at each prize again this year. He is of the cast-iron type and cannot yet be ruled out because of his age. When Catalogue won the Melbourne Cup two years ago he was eight years old and equalled Tory Boy's age record for the race that had stood since 1865. He failed in the cup last year, and so were he to win this year he would achieve a remarkable distinction. The Winter Cup has fallen to Catalogue as a seven-year-old, eight-year-old. and nine-year-old, but he is still not the record holder for age. as Mount Boa was 10 years old when he ;

scored his sensational success in 1933. However, the oldest other winners besides Catalogue have been eight years, their number comprising Kremlin (1905), King Star (1917), and Gazique (1919). The weight. Catalogue carried last August, 10.3. is a record since the minimum was 8.0. but Toxeuma won in 1930 with 11.5 off a 9.0 minimum. Catalogue alone has won the race more than once. English Jockey Championship. Recent exchanges from London show that at the time when the stoppage of racing was being considered there was very close competition between G. Richards and M. Beary for the jockeys’ premiership, Richards having had 25 winners from 125 mounts, and Beary 23 winners from 124 rides. Beary has been riding in England since 1920 when he was already' a finished horseman, and to the' end of last year he had ridden 952 winners, 1005 seconds, and 1021 thirds from 9379 mounts. Therefore, at the time this advice was received, he needed only' 25 winners to reach his 1000. Jockey Premiership, The following are the leaders in the jockey premiership:— W. .1. Broughton 59 B. H. Morris 53 H. N. Wiggins 47 W. J. Mudford 44 P. Atkins 43 P. Spratt 40 G. R. Tattcrsall 37 G. Camcron 30 L. Dulieu 29 C. T. Wilson 29 R. W. McTavish 28 P. Burgess 27 A. E. Ellis ' 27 L. J. Ellis 26 A. Jenkins 26 E. V. Dye 26 W. Jenkins 25 Broughton topped the list in the 1936-37 season with 63 wins, and was the leader last year, when he rode 80 I winners.
