In snatching victory by a head from Nino Martini in the Manawatu Hunt Club Steeples on Saturday, Royal King gained his first success over country in a long and chequered career. He began racing as a two-year--1 old. but he never caught the judge’s eye on the flat and he was put to hurdling, winning five times in that department. He is now rising 13 years, and evidently he stil] has a race in him, as Saturday’s was only his second appearance this season. He has been in the hands of several owners. Famous Trainer Retires. News comes from Melbourne that the famous trainer R. Bradfield, who has prepared many important winners. has retired. Bradfield won the Melbourne Cup four times, and one of his winners, Patron, established a weight-carrying record for a four-year-old until Phar Lap came along 36 years later to lower it. Perhaps Bradfield's most noteworthy feat as a trainer was in 1919, when he trained the three placed horses for the Caulfield Cup—Lucknow, Nightmatch and Chrome. Before the race that year many of us worried the veteran trainer to give his idea of the race, hoping. no doubt, to get some clue as to which of his three runners he thought the best, says an Australian writer. Eut Bradfield was always a diplomat, and lie said: "The three horses race in different interests. They have not been tried together and all are lit and have excellent chances. Why not back them air.’" Cherry Jack. Cherry Jack, winner of the Grand National Hurdles at Flemington a fortnight ago was bred in unusual circumstances and was on the sale list before he raced. Mr Forsyth, the owner, bought the dam. Cheerio, for 350 guineas, but before she was put into training she was given a spell. When she came into work it was found that she was in foal to an unknown sire, so Hie owner gave her to his son-in-law, Mr Les Faulkiner, of Zara Station, with the option of racing the foal if it were any good, or shooting it. The foal was useless. Cheerio was then mated with David and Cherry Jack was the result.
