CARRYING ON

WAIRARAPA P. & A. SHOW TO BE HELD AS USUAL. DISCUSSION OF GENERAL COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) “We should definitely go on with the job and I recommend that we carry on with our show,” stated Mr J. A. McLeod, president of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society at its meeting in Carterton this morning. It was unanimously decided to hold the show this year, and the president's action in advising the conference at Palmerston North on those lines was endorsed. “The stock will be kept up to show standard in any case, and we stand to lose more by not holding the show, stated Mr McLeod. Mr M. McLeod: “We should carry on like other shows. It would be wrong to take up a defeatist attitude. There was plenty of petrol for the races, and there was no reason why there shouldn’t be some for the show. It was regrettable that a rumour had been circulated throughout the Dominion that all the shows were being cancelled.” Mr G. Hall: “We are practically committed by other associations on the circuit.”

Mr O. A. Cadwallade? (vice-presi-dent): “It would be a great pity to see the standard of stock deteriorate. The war would not last for ever.” Mr P. Bain said it would be a big mistake to let the breeders down. The treasurer, Mr Geo Brown, in commenting that there were two distinct aspects, namely domestic finance and the national point of view, stated that he saw no reason why the show should not be held. Mr L. H. Smart (secretary): “Wairarapa is in a better position than any other society as far as stock exhibits are concerned. It is nearly all local stock. Cutting out the show would have the wrong effect on the morale of the people. Pie pointed out that it would cost approximately £246 if the show was not held. Mr W. H. Booth: “Are we going to let Hitler beat us? We should carry on. We should work in more with Masterton exhibitors and make the two local shows the successes we could expect in war time. We should run the show or join up with the Fifth Column.”

The motion was put to the meeting and carried without dissent. The chairman of the Eastern District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand wrote advising in response to the Wairarapa Society’s enquiry, that the annual conference had been held at Tomoana owing to petrol restrictions, as it was a central place. It was pointed out that only members from that area had attended the last annual conference.

The president referred to the death which had taken place recently of Mr E. Eagle, a past president of the society. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect and it was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to the relatives. . .

The Waimate A. and P. Association advised that its annual show would be held on November 30. Mr C. Amundsen, caretaker of the showgrounds, reported that good progress had been made with maintenance work.
